The Cats

The hillside estate of writer Charles Erskine Scott Wood and poet Sara Bard Field above Highway 17, named for the two eight-foot white cat sculptures at its gate.

Sculptor Robert Paine made the cats in 1922 while staying at the estate; they are known as Leo and Leona. Wood and Field lived there from the mid-1920s, and their guests included Charlie Chaplin, Eleanor Roosevelt, John Steinbeck, Robinson Jeffers and Ansel Adams.

The pair of cats appears on the seal of the Town of Los Gatos. The statues still guard the gate, just off Highway 17.
