Cougars and bobcats

The “cats” of Los Gatos: mountain lions and bobcats live in the hills above town, and they gave the land grant and the town its name.

The 1888 county history says early settlers found wildcats numerous and destructive in the hills, which gave the place its name. A creek history says the first Spanish family to settle heard mountain lions fighting and took it as a sign that water was near.

Both still live in the watershed above Lexington Reservoir, and signs at El Sereno Open Space Preserve warn visitors that it is cougar country.
