Forbes Mill & the Civic Center

On East Main Street, just across the creek from downtown, stand the stone annex of Forbes Mill, the building the town grew up around, and the Civic Center with the library and New Museum Los Gatos.

Discover Forbes Mill & the Civic Center

James Alexander Forbes built a stone flour mill on Los Gatos Creek, and it began grinding on December 1, 1855. Forbes went bankrupt within a few years, but the settlement around the mill was called Forbes Mill, then Forbestown, and finally Los Gatos. (Wikipedia)

The four-story mill was torn down in 1916. The two-story annex added in 1880 still stands by the creek trail and has been California Historical Landmark No. 458 since 1950. (Wikipedia)

New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) opened in the Civic Center in June 2015, joining the old art museum and the Forbes Mill history museum, and shows about ten art and history exhibitions a year. (Wikipedia) The library next door is run by the town itself, not the county. (Wikipedia)

Since 1988 the Civic Center lawn has hosted Music in the Park, free concerts on summer Sunday afternoons from 5 to 7 pm. (Town of Los Gatos)
