John Steinbeck in Los Gatos

John and Carol Steinbeck lived on the edge of Los Gatos from 1936, and he wrote The Grapes of Wrath and finished Of Mice and Men in their house on Greenwood Lane.

Carol Steinbeck designed the small Greenwood Lane house, built in 1936, now in Monte Sereno. A sign on the fence read Arroyo del Ajo. The couple lived there until 1938, then moved to a ranch on Brush Road.

While in Los Gatos, Steinbeck reported on California’s migrant labor camps for the series The Harvest Gypsies, which became the foundation of The Grapes of Wrath.
