Monte Sereno

A small residential city bordered by Los Gatos on three sides, incorporated in 1957 and named for El Sereno mountain; John Steinbeck’s Greenwood Lane house is there.

Monte Sereno means “serene mountain.” It was part of the Rinconada de los Gatos grant and incorporated on May 14, 1957 to keep its semi-rural feel. It has no commercial zoning, shares the 95030 ZIP code with Los Gatos and contracts many services, including police, from the town.

John Steinbeck wrote The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men at 16250 Greenwood Lane, and Neal Cassady lived in a Monte Sereno ranch house in the 1950s.
