Downtown Commercial Historic District

The cluster of 1890s-1930s commercial buildings along West Main Street, North Santa Cruz Avenue and University Avenue, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

The district covers the town’s first commercial crossroads and the only well-kept group of historic shop buildings left in Los Gatos. Its styles run from Queen Anne and Richardsonian Romanesque through Mission Revival to Art Deco.

Landmarks include the 1902 Rankin Block (the Montebello Building), which held the post office from 1917 to 1948; the 1920 First National Bank building with reliefs of the California missions; the Art Deco Bank of America building of 1931-32; and the Charles Wagner River Rock Bungalow, faced entirely with rounded stones from Los Gatos Creek.
