Santa Cruz Avenue

The main shopping street of downtown Los Gatos, running north from Main Street; it became the business center after the 1901 fire on Main Street.

Early Los Gatos did its business on Main Street, on both sides of the creek. Fires in 1891 and 1901 burned much of it, and after the 1901 fire, which destroyed 60 buildings, the business district moved north onto Santa Cruz Avenue.

The corner of Main Street and North Santa Cruz Avenue is the town’s oldest commercial intersection. Buildings such as the 1891 Hofstra Block, also called the La Cañada Building, with its round corner bay and witch-hat roof, and the 1907 Bogart Block, the old Woodmen’s Hall, are part of the Los Gatos Historic Commercial District.
